The Barbary Pirates--1803
external image barbary_map.jpg Four 'states'- Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli
What happened:
Jefferson refused to pay tribute and when the word got to Tripoli (Libya) they declared war on us. Jefferson heard of the declaration and ordered the Navy to blockade the port of Tripoli. They thought that they should block anything from leaving or entering Tripoli, through the port. Jefferson also sends in the Marines, who attacked on land and sea. This led to the first Barbary Wars. This was also the first time we had covert (affairs). After the war, the US and Tripoli decided on a treaty, a peace treaty. The US no longer had to pay tribute to Tripoli, which is what the United States got out of the treaty. Jefferson responded to this bribe, tribute, and piracy with force. Making a precedent that the US will not be bribed and that it is very important to have our ships trading.

Main Point:

The British Navy kidnaps (impresses) American Sailors
What happened:
Jefferson did something called an Embargo. The Embargo Act (1807) stated that we stopped all trade with everyone else in the world. It took us into an economic depression and America couldn’t support itself, so they lifted the Embargo. The north was hit with the most impact and this was the place where most Federalists were. This was called the Non-Intercourse Act (1809) and stated that America could trade with all countries except Britain and France. Jefferson was no longer president during this time.
The 2 main causes of the War of 1812:
1. Impressement of American Sailors
2. Britain arming the Indians with British guns
War Hawks -- Congressmen from the frontier states who wanted war with Britain
The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain

Main Point:

New countries declare independence in the Americas
What Happened:President Monroe decided to act independently of Britain. In 1823, he made a foreign policy statement called the Monroe Doctrine. The Doctrine stated that the United States would not interfere in European affairs or affairs of European colonies. The Doctrine protected the Americas from being colonized by European countries after they had declared their independence. Britain supported the Doctrine but the United States didn’t have enough military power to support the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine became more important as the United States grew. The United States has used the Doctrine as a statement in foreign policy for over 100 years.
